I had to do this for myself first.

Have you ever had your garage look like this? I have! When I moved back in 2015 I didn't realize how much I owned that I never even used. I packed it all up though and moved to a MUCH smaller place. It all "fit", but I knew I had to downsize, to organize. I spent a years worth of time going through everything I had and realized I had memories attached to most everything I had so I had a difficult time letting go of it all. I came to terms with some items being from a time when things weren't so good, so I could throw them out. I had boxes and boxes of school papers, drawings, and cards from when my children were little. I had a great idea! Digital is forever and it doesn't take up space. I set to taking pictures of everything I wanted to keep.

Even my own childhood toys were something I had kept. I did save a few that are worth money and needed cleaned up. But everything else was either sold, donated or given away. Papers were tossed or filed accordingly. Yea for shredders! The important documents were shredded so my identity was kept safe. I used a scanner to save all my photos I had in boxes. My everything became digital or filed appropriately. I still had a lot of stuff though. I felt everything I had had value because I had purchased it or was gifted it somehow. My first purge was done, but now on to the second part of the process.
